Chiang Rai Bears
As the clock struck 12 the Lions finally were off and on their way to Chiang Rai to play, what could be said as the most hotly anticipated fixture of the season, Battle of the Beasts.
Over the last few years the Bears and Lions have formed a friendly rivalry since the Lions inception in 2018. As the years have progressed, so has the comradery and competition between the two sides. I dare say that players from both teams always look forwards to this fixture, which finally has officially been dubbed ‘The Battle Of The Beasts’.
When the Lions arrived, it was a temperate 32 deg C. Lonny, ‘the man behind the curtain’ for CRB had done a good job of keeping the ground nice and green for the fixture.
Smithy was chosen by Coach Hirsty to lead the squad out on the final day of the season. For the first kick of the match Lions were to receive. Phil secured the ball and they were off.
The Bears put out a competitive side which put the Lions on the back foot to begin with. However, once Barker put in a big smash, the Lions settled down and got to work.
As the match went on, the Lions managed to dominate, albeit it was not an easy match, with the likes of Karel, Karl and Lonny putting in some big runs.
Lanna Lions stayed strong in defence. Dtun putting in some of his standard crunching try saving tackles, Luis and Brave fighting back at every ruck to keep the Bears at bay. As well as Pan putting in an emphatic display on wing, making some big hits.
Coach Hirsty had this to say, “Special mention to Palmer who was a great runner today and helped with go forward ball.
It’s also Luis last game for the Lions and I want to thank him for all the hard work he’s put in. It’s been great to have you on board man and all the best for the future.”
The Lions came away with a solid win and secured the title of Battle of the Beasts in it’s inaugural year.
Lanna Rugby Club would like to thank Chiang Rai Northern Bears for yet again, hosting a wonderful tour away to round off the season. Cheers!

“For the lions it’s got to go to one guy, Barker. After spending a whole season recovering to step up for the last game of the season and to perform like he has is incredible”
