After the success of CM10s, the Lionesses were asked to join forces with Saigon Geckos and Hanoi Dragons to form the mighty Viet Chiang to debut at the Bangkok 10’s tournament.
The Bangkok 10’s is held every year towards the end of February. The Lionesses had been put through their paces at practice by Coach Hirsty in preparation for their debut.
Maddie Barry, the Lionesses captain and tour manager, had done a fantastic job rallying the troops and linking up with the Geckos and Dragons to ensure a fantastic weekend ahead.
From the Lionesses Squad, there was; Maddie Barry, Sarah Snead, Grace Gamache, Kristin Coursey, Beaw Thatsanaprai and Hayley Connolly. Unfortunately Jo Eliott couldn’t make it as she was too busy sunning herself in Aus.
The lively pack of Lionesses made their way down the Friday evening to link up with the rest of the Viet Chiang players for a meet and greet before the comp began.
The Viet Chiang regrouped the next day, got kitted up and were stuck into the thick of it. Maddie and Sarah put in some huge hits straight from the get go. Grace, acting as sweeper, collected the loose balls and went on a few runs. On the wings, Kritin and Hayley were fed some lovely balls through from the Viet Chiang back line, making some hard yards for the Viet Chiang. Beaw was making the most of it, knocking down the opposition with her fierce tackling.
It was a blistering hot day, however the Viet Chiang kept at it. Competing at a high level throughout the course as they made their debut at the BKK 10s something to remember.
As the first day drew to a close, it was time to put away the boots and bring out the jugs of beer for what became a rather raucous night celebrating with the Viet Chiang!
Although the players had a bit of a sore head, they gathered together and went at it again for the final day of the tournament. Coach Hirsty was beaming from ear to ear after seeing the Lionesses put in a top performance over the weekend.
Long live Viet Chaing! Let’s have more of the same sooner rather than later!
