Back in October 2023 the mighty Lanna Lionesses played in the Thailand Rugby National 7s Final. Here is the report from that weekend.
As you all know, the Lionesses just competed in the Thailand Rugby National 7s tournament this past weekend and they were phenomenal!
The squad contained 3 women who had never played rugby before, and it was the first ever national tournament for Lanna Rugby Club.
First match was against Nakhon Ratchasima Rajabhat University Alumni and it was a steep learning curve. There were numerous drives by debutant Vic St Leger, but it wasn’t meant to be.
Second match was against the Thailand Royal Air Force, which was packed full of international experience. Defense was solid this game, but we were over powered on the wing on a number of occasions. This team went on to become national champions!
Third match was against TNSU Bangkok Alumni and it was highly competitive. Learning from their first two games, Kelly Fahey and Zab Potter led the line in defense, and were complemented by some crunching tackles from Captain Maddie Berry. Victoria St Leger again broke the line twice; powering through midfield and running 80 meters only to be stopped 3 meters short, and another time kicking through and dribbling the ball only to be turned over.
We are immensely proud of each and every player this weekend. Considering that this time last year the club had one registered female player, it is an amazing achievement to go to national finalists in such a short time. Well done to Zab, Vic and Kelly for playing your first womens contact rugby game.
Thank you to our friends from Southerners Women’s Rugby Bangkok with the help of Chiang Mai-ian Aim for supporting us.
